Barbara A. Taylor, M.S., CCC-SLP (Owner/Director)

Barbara A. Taylor earned both her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1990 and her Master of Science degree in 1991 in Speech-Language Pathology from Loyola College in Maryland.  Mrs. Taylor is licensed by the Maryland State Board of Examiners to practice Speech-Language Pathology .  She is nationally certified with her Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA).  She was granted her 5th Award for Continuing Education (ACE) in spring 2007 for earning 70 hours continuing education within a 36 month period.  She has been active in the Maryland Speech-Language Hearing Association (MSHA) since 1998 and has co-chaired or chaired various tracts each year.  In 2000 she served as the Annual Convention Co-chair and in 2001, she chaired the entire convention.  She is  a member of the American Academy of Private Practice in Speech Pathology & Audiology. 

Barbara has been a speech-language pathologist for over 16 years.  Her clients say she is a dynamic SLP who is passionate about working with her clients to achieve their highest potential!  She has worked with infants through geriatrics within a variety of settings including: the Kennedy Krieger Lower school, the Kennedy Krieger Middle School, the Kennedy Krieger Extended Day school, a variety of adult settings, outpatient centers, North Arundel Hospital, home health with medically fragile infants and children, Clinical Supervision at Loyola College in Columbia, and the Howard County Public Schools. 

In 2003, (after 10 weeks of couch rest) Barbara became the mother of twins, Sarah & Jake, who were born prematurely at 35 1/2 weeks. Barbara says, “Sarah & Jake help me to become a better mommy and a better speech-language pathologist.  Each day they remind me to look at the world through their eyes—with a child’s wonder, humility, and love.”  Barbara balances her professional life—her private practice, Help Me Speak, with raising her beautiful twins.

Barbara is certified/trained in the following techniques/methods: Level 2 PROMPT, REI (Rhythmic Entrainment Intervention), Toomey’s Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) approach to feeding, Affect Based Language Curriculum (ABLC), Talk Tools hierarchies (Sara R. Johnson), Beckman stretches, Kaufman techniquesFast ForWord, T.E.A.C.C.H., American Sign Language, Suzanne Evans Morris Mealtime strategies, Deep Pharyngeal Neuromuscular Stimulation (DPNS).  She has experience with Hanen play based therapy, PECS, Sensory Integration techniques, and other traditional methods.  Also, Barbara is a certified presenter for Joseph Garcia’s Sign2Me network.

Nancy M. Gumbel, M.S., CCC-SLP

Nancy earned her Bachelor of Science degree in 1992 from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and her Masters of Science degree in 2001 from Old Dominion University in Speech-Language Pathology.

Nancy enjoys working with all ages of children.  She is trained in PROMPT, the Talk Tools hierarchies, Kaufman methods, and American Sign Language.  She has worked in settings including private practice, public schools, outpatient clinics, hospitals with pediatrics and adults. 

In her personal life, she has a supportive husband and two wonderful children—a 3 year old and a 2 year old—who keep her busy!

Jennifer Meade, M.A. CCC-SLP

Jennifer earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech and Hearing science from George Washington University in 1993 and her Master of Arts degree from Appalachian State University in Communication Disorders in 1997.  Jennifer is licensed by the Maryland State Board of Examiners to practice Speech-Language Pathology.  She is nationally certified with the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) and has completed 20 additional hours of content classes in Communication Disorders.

 

Jennifer has been a practicing therapist for 14 years.  She is very energetic, enthusiastic and caring!  Jennifer enjoys working with children of all ages.  She is trained in Level 2 PROMPT, Contextual Probes for Articulation Competency, Structured-Contextual Articulation Therapy, Articulatory Production Training – Programmed Sensory Motor Approach and American Sign Language.  She has experience with ABA (verbal behavior / errorless teaching), PECS, Natural Aided Language Stimulation, Hanen play based therapy, Kaufman Methods and Talk Tools Hierarchies.  Jennifer received extensive training in Sensory Integration (including oral – motor skills) at the Hampton Cares Pediatric Symposium in NYC in 2004.  She has extensive personal and professional experience with Autism and attended the DAN! Conference in Washington, DC in April 2006 & 2007.  Jennifer was a 2006 Montgomery County Public Schools award recipient; The Connie DeRoche Award for Collaborative Consultation.  She has experience in a variety of setting including private practice, public schools (pre-k through high school), hospitals, out patient clinics, home health, residential facilities (for those with significant mental retardation and / or psychological needs -) and skilled nursing facilities.

 

Her family consists of her husband, her adorable son, and a cat.  When she is not working, she is devoting her time to her family.

Kathleen Dougherty, M.S., CCC-SLP

Kathleen earned both her Bachelor of Arts degree in 2004 and her Master of Science degree in 2006 in Speech-Language Pathology from Loyola College in MD.  Kathleen is licensed by the Maryland State Board of Examiners to practice Speech-Language Pathology.  She is nationally certified with the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA). 

 

Kathleen has been a speech therapist since May 2006.  Kathleen is dynamic, devoted to her clients, and sensitive to their needs.  In her career to date she has worked in a variety of settings: Speech & Language Literacy Center, the Scottish Rite Childhood Language Center, and Good Samaritan Hospital.  She has substantial experience with Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), Applied Verbal Behavior, & Relationship Development Intervention (RDI).  She has worked as a lead therapist within ABA home programs during which she developed & provided treatment for children with ASD, charted progress on goals, trained new therapists, and provided family training for carry-over of skills & techniques.

 

She has experience with Talk Tools Hierarchies, Beckman stretches, Kaufman methods, Dynavox augmentative communication systems, ASL, bedside swallow evaluations, and Video Fluoroscopy Swallow Studies (VFSS).  Her clinical experience includes: Autism Spectrum Disorders, apraxia, articulation, Down syndrome, developmental delays, dysphagia, CVA (stroke)/aphasia, and dysarthria.

Melanie Heiser, Administrative Assistant

Melanie earned her Bachelor of       degree in      from     . 

 

Melanie has extensive experience with finance, business software, management systems, databases, organization, and insurance. 

 

Melanie will be in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.  Ask her questions in person or via email.  She is happy to help!

 

Her family consists of her husband and 3 boys—ages 8, 6, and 4 years—who keep her hoppin’ when she’s not at work.  Also, she enjoys spending time with her family, scrapbooking—  memibooks, and participating in her sons’ school events.
